Afford Speech Therapists support individuals to communicate with others around them. Communication is an important skill that conveys to others how you feel, what you want or helps you share in conversation during social settings.

Enhance Communication

To assist Afford staff, families and carers to communicate more effectively with clients with minimal verbal skills, our speech therapists have incorporated Key Word Sign (KWS) training across Afford sites.

Supporting Families and Carers

The speech therapists visit Afford sites to provide training based on interest from the staff, families, and carers of the site.

Use Signs and Gestures

The training involves supporting participants to use as much basic sign language and gestures as possible, to assist clients who have difficulty understanding and expressing themselves.

These gestures could be in the form of placing the hand to the mouth to signify ‘I want to eat’, or placing the head on a hand to convey that the client would like to go to sleep.

Develop Your Skills

By introducing these signs and gestures, staff and carers can engage with clients in various ways. This also develops the skills of individuals to make themselves understood and their choices well known.

Whole-Of-Life Disability Supports

Our speech therapists have supported clients to say their very first words and now have introduced training to support others around them. It is this whole-of-life approach to disability services that makes Afford trusted by thousands of people across Australia every day to deliver exceptional supports under the NDIS.
