Our Post:

Afford has established an Allied Health team across NSW, VIC and QLD which includes a strong network of professionals in Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy and Psychology.

Lego Therapy

Recently, our speech pathologist, Linda, and psychologist, Stephanie, kicked off a new social skills group at our Prestons Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE). Each week, our clients gather together and learn valuable social skills, such as communicating effectively in social situations and controlling their behaviour. The group has been such a success that more participants want to join every week!

The Afford Social Skills group is a 10 week program that focuses on enhancing the communication and social skills of the participants. The first half of the group session consisted of interactive activities with a specific focus on:

  1. Active listening
  2. Conversation skills – initiating and maintaining conversations
  3. Appropriate versus inappropriate interactions
  4. Friendship skills – safety circles

Learning That’s Fun And Engaging

The second half of the group session is when our clients’ social and communication skills are really put to the test. This is when they spent time completing ‘Lego Therapy’, where group members take on the roles of “Engineer”, “Supplier” and “Builder” and work cooperatively towards producing the model at the end of the 10 week program.

The great part of this project is that clients get to practice their social skills each week in a fun and engaging situation.

Everyone enjoys the Lego Therapy time, with participants always eager to join in to work together to contribute to and complete the models.

Allied Health Services In Day Programs

Some of the other ways in which our Allied Health teams are making positive waves within Afford services is the implementation of life sized games that can be used during down times throughout all Afford Day Programs.

Sensory Kits To Support Clients

In addition, our Allied Health team has been instrumental in providing training for our sites to use therapy sensory kits. These kits include slimes, squishy balls, puzzles, putty, etc and are used for sensory integration.
