At Afford, we focus on ability. We believe that every individual has unique talents to contribute to the wider community and Afford is here to let those abilities soar! Andrea attends Afford’s Kings Park Day Program every week. She is blind and deaf and receives individual support with sign language.
Realise Your NDIS Goals
With great determination and perseverance, Andrea lets no obstacle get in the way of achieving her goals. She is an intelligent and eager young woman who is set on reaching for the stars to realise her NDIS goals of staying active, improving her quality of life and overall wellbeing.
With support from Afford staff member, Lisa, Andrea participates in a range of activities. She has a vibrant personality and aside from enjoying outings with her friends, she also pushes herself to step outside of her comfort zone. She recently participated in Afford’s Funathon at Blacktown Sports Park and also took to the stage with her Kings Park friends for Afford’s Got Talent at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.
To develop her life skills, every Tuesday, Andrea and Lisa run the cooking program at Kings Park Day Program, where they make a variety of different healthy and nutritious meals, along with others who attend the site. They have made delicious lunches, such as Brazilian chicken and rice, and scrumptious tea-time treats for all to enjoy.
Lisa assists Andrea with cooking on the stove top and guides Andrea through the processes, while still allowing her to develop her skills so that she learns to cook independently.
Andrea has also taken part in travel training and has been supported by Afford to learn the different cues for catching the train for a recent trip to Blacktown.
The biggest achievement for Andrea came when she decided that she wanted to gain even more independence by finding a job that she would enjoy and where she can earn her own money to spend how she pleases.
Take Charge of Your Life
Once a week, Lisa supports Andrea to attend work placement at Afford’s Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) in Minchinbury where she packs boxes with consumer products.
Not only does Andrea complete her jobs with accuracy, she also completes tasks quickly and with great enthusiasm – all without the sense of sight! She ensures that her workspace in neat and tidy and that helps her to navigate the items on the table.
With her own unique system, Andrea does an amazing job each and every time. She loves being part of the workplace and the other employees enjoy having Andrea as part of their team.
Andrea is an inspiration to us all! With support from Afford, her talents and unique abilities are able to shine and she is able to live the life she wants under the NDIS.
