Looking for Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) can be a challenge. Learn everything you need to know right here.
Easy steps for Supported Independent Living or Specialist Disability Accommodation.
Once you have found your dream home in Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), we will help you to make the move. We will create a step-by-step plan just for you.
This means you don’t have to worry about anything if you don’t want to.
But we also encourage people with disability, their families and support workers to do a few small things to make the move smooth.
Step One – Get to know the neighbourhood
Visit the neighbourhood where you plan to live. Take a close look up at your new street. Look at the homes near you, just for fun.
When you’re feeling comfortable you might like to explore the block. Have a friend or family member join you. If you feel up to it give any new neighbours a wave.
Is there a footpath to walk or use your wheelchair on? Is there anything you might need to make exploring easier? If yes let us know so we can help.
Step Two – Meet your new housemates
If there’s a specific home you like, you’ll want to know who lives there already (if it’s shared accommodation) and what it’s like to be a member of the gang. If it’s solo accommodation you’ll want to know who lives close by and the support workers too.
The Afford team will set up a meet and greet so you can say hello to your new housemates and get to know them.
You can find out who they are and what they like to do when at home or out. You can ask them what it’s like to live here and why they love it.
Step Three – Take it in small steps
Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure, but it can also be a bit scary. New things often are. To make sure you feel comfortable in your new home we can arrange for you to transition into the accommodation over a series of dates.
Once you’ve signed a service agreement you can stay overnight or a few nights. Then, when you and your family or support network is comfortable and happy, we will help you to move in.
Of course, we will be right with you every step of the way. And even now, if you need advice and support at any time, we’re just a phone call away.
