Everything you need to know about funding

A quick refresher – our Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes offer exactly that: support and independent living. NDIS allow people with disability to live with others or on their own, if they choose to.

SIL packages can include support for everyday household tasks and personal care. Additional help with community-related independence goals, such as local social events, joining in with activities and enjoying hobbies, is also available.

More accessible homes, with built-in adjustments for people who have higher needs, are known as Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). These are purpose-built or adapted for Afford and designed to make sure disability-related support services are delivered safely.

NDIS packages allow people to choose whether they live on their own or with others in SDA housing too.

Step One – Is SIL right for you?

SIL eligibility: People who need some level of help at home all the time are generally eligible for SIL funding from NDIS.

To assess eligibility and the value of an SIL package, NDIS will be guided by the level of help a person with disability needs in these areas:

Doing the cooking and cleaning, attending to personal care and having a routine to manage these everyday tasks

Taking medication and going to medical appointments

Building on social skills, getting to and from activities and events, and visiting family and friends

Putting behaviour supports into place

Taking on personal admin duties that are not part of an everyday routine.

Step Two – Is SDA right for you?

People living with disability whose support needs are best delivered in a specially designed house are eligible for SDA funding.

To assess eligibility and the budget for SDA package, NDIS will look at whether the person has a lot of trouble doing daily tasks on their own.

The NDIS terms extreme functional impairment and very high support needs define this part of its SDA eligibility criteria.

NDIS will learn about your strengths, any difficulties and daily support needs. They may talk to your health professional/s too.

You can also read more about Supported Living oand SIL and SDA funding requirements on the NDIS website.

Did you know … You can pay yourself

You can pay for support services with your own money. This is an option for one-off requests or to top up your government funding package. Some people pay for themselves while they are waiting for NDIS approval.
