Afford’s customer Krystal from Western Australia was recently nominated for the Young Community Citizen of the Year Award in Rockingham City Council’s 2022 Australia Day Awards. To honour this nomination, Krystal received a certificate of acknowledgement from Rockingham Mayor, Deb Hamblin and had the chance to meet her local heroes.

Across Afford’s supports and services, all customers will always be encouraged to reach their highest potential.

“Krystal is very well known so it was great to see the community recognise her hard work. She has used her own experience with disability to help others,” said Lifestyle Assistant, Janet Summerskill.

As an animal lover with Autism and PTSD, Krystal has experienced firsthand the therapeutic benefits of animal therapy. She runs workshops on her family farm for children in the community with disability. They can meet, brush and feed her horses, have a pony ride and even meet some of the other farm animals and dogs.

“It’s just amazing to see how many people know and admire Krystal. She was courageous on the day and she felt so honoured to be nominated. I was also very honoured to attend with her as she could only bring one guest. It brought tears to my eyes when she asked me,” continued Janet.

After receiving her certificate, Krystal met and took a photo with WA’s Premier, Mark McGowan and WA’s Minister for Police, Road Safety, Defence Industry and Veterans Issues, Paul Papalia. Krystal was over the moon to talk to both men, who thanked her and gave her their cards.

“She is still buzzing about the day and how accommodating everyone was to her and her service dog, Rex. We printed out all the photos from the day and made a collage to frame and put up in the house. Krystal loved it,” said Janet.

Congratulations once again, Krystal. We cannot wait to see what you achieve in 2022.
