From the happy and healthy smiles Amy, Josh and Jon were sporting on Bribie beach, you would never know that a few weeks ago, they were in insolation with COVID-19. The housemates are over the moon to be back out in the community and making new memories. Whilst experiencing COVID-19 had its challenges, the residents have found a new appreciation for friendship, family and resilience.

Afford’s supports and services are there to support you throughout all of life’s ups and downs.

Amy, Josh and Jon all handled having COVID-19 pretty well and luckily, their symptoms were mild. They understood they had to isolate until they were feeling better,” said Lifestyle Assistant, Bernadette Van Zyl.

Each of the housemates had their coping mechanisms. For Josh, his online dance classes lifted his spirits during isolation. While a warm cup of milo delivered to Jon’s door was his daily highlight.

For Amy, she received a special care package from her family. It included a new Nintendo gaming console which was a welcome gift during isolation. The Caboolture team would love to give a big shout out to Amy’s family for their thoughtfulness.

“Even though Josh did not like the idea of staying in his room, he did it with no complaints. Once he was out of isolation, the first thing he said was ‘yay freedom’ and ever since, he has been spending more and more time with the group,” continued Bernadette.

She added, “It just goes to show all the safety precautions work, as staff were doing 12-hour shifts and did not catch COVID-19.”

Across all sites, Afford has implemented daily Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT), Personal Protective Equipment (N95 masks, gloves, face shields and gowns), temperature checking, stringent cleaning and social distancing requirements. Staff are committed to putting our residents and clients first, managing COVID-19 with as much diligence and care that they would provide for their own families.

“Something I always remind the staff is that our residents see each other and us as their family,” said Bernadette.

Since recovering, all clients and staff have enjoyed returning to their usual activities, such as visiting Bribie beach and accessing the local community. They are looking forward to going to the drive-in movies in the next few weeks.
