Having the chance to get practical, hands-on work experience, is so valuable in figuring out if a certain job is right for you.
SLES Working for You
With Afford’s SLES (School Leaver Support) Program, trainees get the chance to learn different skills and have access to a range of opportunities and work experience placements in a variety of industries.
Industry Visits to Gain Insight
Clayton and Jared attend our Ingleburn SLES Program. They recently attended an industry visit at Bunnings Warehouse and had the chance to stroll around the store and explore the various jobs available. They were able to ask questions about role responsibilities and find out more about the different types of jobs available at Bunnings.
Work Experience for Practical Know-How
From this industry visit, Clayton and Jared were offered six weeks of work experience. This was an awesome opportunity for the duo! The work experience enabled them to gain confidence in managing a real workplace environment and gain practical experience – such as customer relations- that they can apply in various industries. In addition, the hope for Clayton and Jared is to secure paid employment with Bunnings at the end of their work experience.
During their six week work experience the trainees gained more insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of Bunnings. They also attended a workshop which is part of the Bunnings local community support group. This community support group helps local organisations with projects such as painting and gardening. Clayton and Jared joined one of these community projects at Ambarvale. They were hands-on and helped out with gardening and painting and put in a tremendous effort to support the project.
Contribute to the Wider Community Through Work
Through work experience, Clayton and Jared have been exposed to not only work life, but also to ways in which organisations support their local communities. It is this insight, that gives our trainees a greater understanding of employment, their employers and their personal contribution to society as a whole.
