On top of the world

Stewart from Noble Park Community Centre felt on top of the world as he soared 120m above the CBD on the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel.

Making special memories with support by your side are just some of the great experiences you can expect from Afford’s Community Centres.

Inspired by a traditional Ferris wheel but equipped with accessibility modifications and 21st century technology, the Melbourne Star gave Stewart the chance to feel like superman flying over his city.

“He had been looking forward to doing this even before Melbourne’s recent lockdown, so to finally get there and be able to do fun things again, it was a great day,” said Lifestyle Assistant Kathleen Ferguson.

Stewart is a wheelchair user with low vision and Kathleen shared that it was great to visit a local attraction that was fully accessible and inclusive.

“One of Stewart’s favourite parts of the day was the audio commentary over the speakers in the cabins. They describe the landmarks and give a bit of history too. Stewart loved some of the dad jokes they shared as well,” said Kathleen.

Kathleen gets quite nervous around heights but she said the sweaty palms were worth it for Stewart to have such a great day.

“He thought my fear of heights was pretty funny. We both also enjoyed seeing the LEGO Brickman replica when we came off the wheel,” continued Kathleen.

Stewart is working towards accessing the community more independently, so the pair stopped by Costco on the same day. Sharing Kathleen’s membership, Stewart was able to experience the new craze of shopping wholesale and loved it.
