Recently the Condell Park Community Centre team have channelled their inner chef and made some amazing progress with their culinary skills. The cooking program is an exciting weekly activity where clients shop for and cook healthy meals every Thursday.

Afford’s Community Centres run a range of activities for clients to have fun opportunities to discover their interests and grow in all aspects of life.

“Everyone at Condell Park is a superstar! They each give it their absolute best every week,” said Team Leader of Condell Park Community Centre, Judy Blanch.

The team usually hold a huddle before their trip to the local supermarket to work out what everyone wants to make and write a list of ingredients. Pizza and pasta have been a big hit now that the weather is starting to cool down.

Our staff assist clients in selecting nutritious recipes that are quick and easy to make, keeping in mind any specific diet plans that may need to be observed. This support ensures residents are still having fun with their food and nourishing themselves from the inside out.

“The cooking program gives them independence and essential life skills. Whilst they love learning to cook, their favourite part of the activity is getting to enjoy the meals after they have finished making them. It’s rewarding,” continued Judy.

The clients practice their slicing and dicing techniques along with good hygiene practices and the importance of safety procedures in the kitchen.

The cooking program is just one way that Afford’s Community Centre encourages clients to learn new life skills whilst feeling empowered to make choices that bring them joy.
