The sound of meat sizzling on a hot BBQ and laughter coming from all around, that’s what the clients and staff of Southport Community Centre experienced as part of their Armchair Travel program. The new program is bringing culture and international flavours straight to Queensland.

Covid-19 has stopped most of just enjoying travel overseas, but our creative staff at Southport community centre have managed to give our clients a taste of international destinations right at home.

As part of their armchair travel program, staff and clients decide on a country that they would like to learn more about and research. This week, it was Brazil!

Brazilian BBQs are renowned for the variety and copious amounts of meat that they sizzle on a hot BBQ. They are also well known for their huge social gatherings with family and friends.

Our Southport Affordians headed out to their local Broadwater Parklands on the Gold Coast and fired up the ‘barbie’ for a delicious Brazilian inspired feast!

For clients, Roger, Lily, Jessica, Natasha and Crystal, the outing was a great opportunity to learn more about Brazilian culture. It also offered many opportunities to develop social skills, extend friendships and engage in the local community.

The events of 2020 have seen our staff step up and create engaging and stimulating activities and programs for our clients, despite the challenges of restrictions and heightened safety procedures.

Every individual who attends an Afford community centre has the chance to learn more about themselves and the world around them. They have support from lifestyle assistants and team leaders who genuinely care and can help them achieve their goals and life aspirations.
