When we welcome a new client and family into the Afford community, we always consider every element of that person’s life and how we can support them – and their family – to bring happiness.
Support at Home, For Work and in Life
We genuinely care for every individual’s needs and our person-centred approach to disability services means we provide supports for home, at work and in life under the NDIS.
Jonathon is a new client who recently joined our Bexley Day Program community. He has tried other services, but just wasn’t achieving all that he wanted out of life.
Supporting New Clients Get Settled
At first Jonathon started at Bexley Day Program two days a week. He instantly hit it off with everyone at the site and quickly made friends with others and staff.
Staff at Bexley Day Program are friendly and easy going and make sure this supportive and welcoming attitude is reflected in everything they do for clients. For Jonathon, this meant that staff were ready to get to know him and all his interests to develop programs and activities that were just right for him.
Jonathon enjoys a range of activities. In particular he loves going to the local shops by public transport, supported by Afford staff, to buy his favourite lunch – anything that’s Asian cuisine!
Developing Programs Based on Interest and Skills Development
At the site, Jonathon likes the activity room where he can use the computers and iPads for entertaining and educational games and he also likes to go for walks with staff around the local area. Staff quickly realised that Jonathon was keen on foosball, so they went out and bought him a mini foosball table to play while he is at the site which supports hand-eye coordination and concentration.
Jonathon has made friends and is actively engaged in the everyday activities and routines of the site. He even enjoys cleaning at Bexley – washing dishes after he has used them and enjoying his independence.
Jonathon loves his new Day Program so much that he has increased his days from two to five!
Support for Individuals and the Entire Family
Hi mother can’t believe his transformation and is so pleased that Jonathon is in a supportive environment where he can achieve his goals.
I was so worried about the transition as Jonathon hasn’t really enjoyed anywhere. We are really enjoying that Jonathon gets up, showers and gets ready for day program each day. It is huge relief and when we asked him if he wanted to extend his days he was so happy. We’re so glad that Jonathon has fit in at Bexley. We now know we made the right choice.” – Gillian
