Our Post:

A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all, it teaches entire trust. — Gertrude Jekyll

Thanks to a Community Building Partnerships grant, our Lakemba Respite site has a refreshed and blossoming garden space that offers our clients more opportunities to learn gardening skills, enjoy the outdoors and socialise with friends.

At Lakemba, the garden that was once bare has now been filled with Jasmine hedges along the back fence and the sweet smells of Daisies, Dahlia Dwarfs and Petunia flowers.

Respite is a Place to Learn

A garden is more than mere flowers in pots. A garden represents many opportunities for learning.

As part of the makeover, clients are encouraged to get hands-on in the garden. Lakemba runs a program that allows clients to learn how to plant seeds, care for seedlings, identify weeds for removal and give the plants just the right amount of water and care.

Respite is for All Abilities

The garden at Lakemba is accessible to clients of all abilities. Raised garden beds ensure that those in wheelchairs can also get their hands dirty and enjoy the fun.

Everyone develops their communication skills by working together to care for the garden. Chatting and laughter are also part of the gardening program which supports healthy social interaction and the development of new friendships.

Take Time Out at Respite

More than just the skills that are developed during the garden program, Lakemba’s garden also brings a sense of calm and fulfilment.

The garden space, with its fragrant flowers, wooden cross over bridge and lovely seating spaces, give everyone the chance to relax and unwind. It’s now a calming place where clients choose to spend time to centre themselves and relax.

Their garden can be a place to take time out or meditate for wellbeing.
