Gavin is passionate about many things. He loves getting to know new people. He enjoys going out and socialising with friends through Club Afford. His love of music has seen him attend many live bands and concerts, as well as musical productions on stage. Most of all, he loves his footy.
For Gavin, it was a Friday like any other. Little did he know the life-changing experience coming his way. Louise, Afford Queensland Customer Care Manager, called Gavin’s home to speak with his mum, Gloria.
“I know Gavin is a big Titans fan. Afford has two tickets to the next Titans game. It’s the first game where fans are allowed back into the stadium. Would Gavin like to go?”
When Gloria told Gavin of Afford’s offer for Titans tickets, his response was priceless. Living with intellectual disability, Gavin sometimes finds it difficult to express himself, but his reaction needed no explanation. A smile spreading from ear to ear, he eagerly accepted the tickets and couldn’t wait to tell everyone he knew that he was going to the game.
Afford is a partner of the Gold Coast Titans and supports the club’s All Abilities team. With only 2,000 tickets available for the first fan attended game since COVID-19, this was a once in a lifetime experience gifted to Gavin.
Before the game, Gavin rang his brother in Sydney and friends in Melbourne to tell them his good news.
“Watch out for me on the TV!” He said to them, almost bragging that he was one of a select few attending.
Gavin is a long-time Titans fan. He shares his passion for footy and the Titans with his Uncle Peter, who also lives on the Gold Coast. But Gavin has never attended a Titans game.
On the day of the game, Gavin was ready early with his Titans branded gear draped around him. Brett, a Lifestyle Assistant from Afford’s Gold Coast Day Program, supported him on the day.
The pair walked into Suncorp Stadium and took their seats. The game promised excitement with the Titans winning four of their past six games at Suncorp Stadium.
Gavin and Brett cheered on the players as they tackled, passed the ball and jumped out of their seats when they scored a try! They relished eating traditional Aussie footy food and the stadium atmosphere. Despite the final score, Gavin loved every minute of the experience.
“I liked being a VIP. It was the best time ever and I can’t wait to go and see the Titans in the flesh again,” Gavin said.
Gavin lives an independent lifestyle under the NDIS with support from Afford. He is a friend to all at his day program on the Gold Coast and regularly attends Club Afford outings and activities. On occasion, Gavin also attends Afford Respite for a break from the everyday.
Next, he hopes to one day travel on his own to explore more of the world around him. While international and some state travel restrictions are still in effect, Gavin is satisfying his wanderlust through his Gold Coast Day Program’s ‘Armchair Travel’ initiative. Ireland will be Gavin’s first destination of choice.
After that, Gavin and his mum and dad will explore independent living options that give Gavin the freedom to live life how he wants, with support when he needs it.
