The winners of the Afford Shield have been announced! Congratulations to the Bulldogs team for becoming the inaugural Champions of the Heroes With Ability Afford Shield!

Afford Partners with Heroes with Ability

Afford is so proud to be involved with the Heroes With Ability initiative. Founded by George Tonna and Marco Quintao, the initiative has allowed people of all abilities to participate in a modified competition of touch football.

Heroes With Ability includes all individuals; no matter their disability. People living with intellectual disability, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, physical and other disability are welcome to join and participate.

In the lead up to the Gala Day on 20 September, clients from Afford Day Programs from across Sydney met at Peter Miller Park in Casula to train. The training was all about developing skills. Clients would learn how to pass, kick and work as a team.

Develop Skills and Make Friends

Most importantly, during the 10 weeks of training, many people forged friendships and great memories to last a lifetime.

On Gala Day, all teams were focussed on victory. This was the day that the skills they had learned would come into play.

Every team had an animal icon to represent their team to foster strong mateship. It also made everyone very excited to be as part of a team. There were the Bulldogs, Eagles, Rabbits, and Tigers. All teams were placed into pools to play against each other. The top two sides went head to head in the final to become reigning champions of the Heroes With Ability Afford Shield.

Inclusive Opportunities for All

Gala Day was an amazing experience for everyone. Although it centred around competition, the day was filled with camaraderie and fun. Everyone just went out to enjoy the day.

Many participants’ skills had come a long way since the first training session. It was wonderful to have such a vibrant atmosphere of inclusivity and friendship for all participants, no matter their disability.

Afford champions inclusive communities and encourages all members of the Afford community to stay active to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle under the NDIS.

Afford’s partnership with Heroes With Ability is another way in which we go beyond traditional service offerings to give individuals opportunities, to realise their dreams and participate in activities they enjoy.
