When you first step into a workplace, it’s a very different environment to what you were used to at school. That’s where Afford’s SLES (School Leaver Employment Support) program comes into play. SLES trainees have the benefit of a trainer that can support them to learn about life in the workforce.

Develop Skills For the Workplace

During the two-year SLES program, trainees are given opportunities to develop their skills and attend industry visits, so they know what to expect at work. These monthly industry visits give trainees a glimpse into work life and the chance to see how all the skills they have learned can be put into practice.

Our Ingleburn trainees, Nick, Kerem, and Britney, were lucky enough to have an industry visit with supermarket giant, Coles. They attended the Coles store at Macarthur Square, which offered great opportunities to learn more about the different roles within a supermarket.

Industry Visits

Trainees met the store manager, who welcomed them and provided a walking tour around the store. The manager discussed all the different roles at Coles. Everything from checkout operators, grocery packers, deli staff and administration staff who worked in the office.

Get Practical Experience in the Workplace

After an informative tour of the store, trainees were overwhelmed with excitement with the store manager asked if they would be interested in doing work experience at their store. Of course, they said ‘YES!’

A few weeks later, trainees arrived at the store, ready to start their work experience. Before they started, trainees participated in a two-hour induction to ensure that they are aware of the policies, procedures and safety rules in the workplace.

Trainees enjoyed doing a range of tasks during their work experience at Coles. It gave them great practical experience and gave them a ‘foot in the door’ to move into paid employment later down the track.

Be Confident in Your Abilities

Afford’s SLES Program is all about supporting trainees to develop their skills, so they are confident in their abilities. This confidence will place them in a great position to seek and secure employment opportunities that interest them.
