Thanks to generous Community Building Partnerships grant funding, Afford’s Lakemba Respite has had a backyard makeover! This new back garden and yard area will benefit the many people who visit the respite site. It now provides a serene and happy environment to relax.
Take Time Out At Respite
Afford’s respite sites are a home away from home, where individuals can feel safe and welcome to take some time out from the everyday. They are places where everyone can come together and get involved in things that they enjoy. But respite can also be a place just to sit back, relax and have some time to yourself.
The $18,000 grant funding received by Lakemba Respite was put towards creating ‘chill out’ zones to benefit clients. The site now features a lovely, welcoming undercover area with ample seating and beautiful plants to admire. A new retaining wall in this space creates a cosy and safe place for people to come together.
Grant Funding Supports Clients to Learn
The backyard now boasts an amazing wooden bridge with rope handles for clients to enjoy walking across in the sunshine. The valuable Community Building Partnerships Funding has also enabled the site to incorporate a grand chicken coup! It will not only be enjoyable for clients that stay at the site to have chickens as pets, but it also serves to teach them about responsibility and caring for others.
The updated colorbond fence provides privacy for the site. The new garden beds and pots will soon pour over with seasonal vegetables and flowers and herbs.
The space is now a place where everyone can gather to have a BBQ or share their thoughts and feelings. The area is a place or learning and sensory stimulation which will engage all who visit the site.
Significant funds such as this, provided by Community Building Partnership Funding, allows Afford to enhance its facilities and learning environment for the many people with disability who attend our sites.
