Afford’s School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) across the nation are back in action and have welcomed several new changes.

All sites have implemented strong COVID-19 safety measures to ensure we continue supporting trainers and trainees in every way we canto continue to deliver our SLES program in a safe environment.

In the first week back, our Penrith SLES team settled into their new location and SLES officially launched in South Australia.

Afford is committed to keeping everyone safe. W, so we have implemented Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), temperature checking and stringent cleaning to all SLES sites across the nation.

“I bring the COVID-19 station downstairs to the foyer with me every morning. When everyone arrives, they sign in, sanitise their hands and take their RAT. We also temperature check on arrival and then three times throughout the day,” said Penrith’s Senior SLES Vocational Trainer, Sharon Figl.

The safety protocols also include trainees wearing their face masks when indoors and ensuring they social distance at all times.

“Just like all sites, we have single tables that are spaced out so trainees are socially distanced at all times,” continued Sharon.

In the first week back, we also celebrate our Penrith SLES team settling into their new location and SLES officially launched in South Australia.

At the end of 2021, the previous Penrith SLES site sustained structural damage from an overnight fire. No one was injured but all businesses and organisations using the building had to relocate.

“On the first day back, it was a bit daunting for the trainees because they had been off for six weeks and there were many changes but everyone was very brave. When the lesson started, they were super happy to be back,” said Sharon.

2022 also marks the opening of SLES in South Australia. Morphett Vale has welcomed their first two trainees with two more expected to join soon.

“With only a small group of three (including me), we were able to dive deep into getting to know each other, playing some ice breaker games and creating posters. The guys bonded over air hockey during lunch and everyone had a great first week,” said Morphett Vale’s Acting SLES Vocational Trainer, Hayley Ovens.

We look forward to seeing our school leavers work towards achieving their dreams in 2022 while growing in confidence, knowledge and real-world experience.
