Trainers at Afford’s SLES (School Leaver Employment Support) Program encourage trainees to try their best and to be whatever they want to be.
Explore Your Interests
You might have an interest in cooking and want to find work in a restaurant. Your interests may lie in helping people within a hospital. Or perhaps organisation is one of your strengths, so an admin role might be right up your alley.
Whatever your interests and whatever your key strengths and abilities, Afford’s SLES program is your chance to explore different work opportunities to find the right job for you.
InfoFest at Kingswood TAFE is one of the events that trainees are supported to attend to learn more about developing their work skills. Our Penrith trainees began their learning early, with a travel training session to get to Kingswood for the InfoFest event. They caught the bus to Kingswood and once there, they were greeted by Sharon Hislop, the TAFE Disability Consultant and Natalie from the TAFE.
See First-Hand Supports Available to You
Sharon and Natalie took the trainees and Afford trainers, Sharon and Tayla, on a tour of the grounds and services.
“Throughout the tour, trainees were really encouraged by Sharon’s words about aiming high,” said Sharon, SLES Penrith Trainer.
Trainees were introduced to the extra services and supports available for students who enrol in TAFE courses. This includes additional tutoring if and when they need it.
Natalie then continued the tour and gave trainees the opportunity to see all the practical and training rooms on offer.
Having the chance to interact with the equipment that is used in the workforce was an exciting experience for many of the trainees.
They were impressed by the hospital training room and liked interacting with the medical mannequins and being able to experience what it would be like to tend to a real patient.
Have Fun and Learn at the Same Time
First year Penrith SLES trainees Jourdarn and Brody were eager to role-play in the dental clinic. They sat in the dentist’s chair and let out their inner larrikins by entertaining staff and other trainees with their humour!
Jourdarn was delighted and excited with the prospect of developing his skills in hospitality. He asked questions about the industrial kitchen, pastry baking and hospitality qualifications on offer at TAFE.
Attending InfoFest was an eye-opening experience for all trainees. They had the chance to learn more about the support available to help them strive for – and achieve! – their work goals.
