In a lovely gesture of giving, our talented and thoughtful Group Home residents and clients presented Afford Board Members with gifts that they made with their own two hands. The gifts were made as a ‘thank you’ for the time and effort that Board Members have put in throughout the year to support Afford and advocate for people with disabilities.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, residents from the Billabong and Empire homes planned out their gift ideas and, along with support from Afford staff members, Keala, Zahra and Vicky, they purchased the equipment and materials to make their creations.

All the residents had the chance to give their gift suggestion. At the end of all the discussion about what to make, everyone agreed to make candle jars and terrariums!

They gathered the items they needed. For the candle jars, they collected wax, lavender extract, glass jars, ribbon, dried flowers and of course, paper strips with the bright Afford logo printed on them.

For the terrariums, residents went out to Bunnings to purchase nice glass and brass pots, as well as soil, plants, decorative stones and little ornaments to place in the finished pots.

Brett, Mark, and Michael were very excited to make their candle jars from scratch. They picked lavender and other flowers from their garden and placed them, along with the Afford logo strips, into the glass jars. After that, they melted the wax and poured it into the jar and created a wick. They then left the wax to set.

In the Empire home, Stanley, Matthew, Steven, Joseph, Marcus, Jeremey, Wesley, and Robin all put their gardening skills to the test. They carefully arranged plants and decorative features in their pots for stunning living creations.

The results of the candle and terrarium making are amazing! They are beautiful gifts for Board members!

Get Involved in Things that Matter To You

As it is the gift giving season, the residents and clients wanted to personally deliver their gifts for the Board Members. So, they headed to the Lakeside Restaurant at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith to present their beautiful gifts to each of the Board Members and delivered some wonderful Christmas cheer.

Along with gift giving, this meeting also presented one of Afford’s Supported Employees, Jeremy, with the chance to achieve one of his goals. Meeting Board Member and Afford Chairman, Ross Fowler, has been a long time goal for Jeremy. He has a strong interest and fascination with everything to do with Councils and is very interested in the role that Ross holds as the Mayor of Penrith City Council.

Afford staff work hard to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to achieve their goals. That’s why Team Leaders organised for Jeremy to meet Ross during this very special get together. Afford’s team worked in the background to coordinate Jeremy’s transport and attendance for the event.

Fulfil Your Dreams with Afford

Once there, Jeremy was overjoyed to finally meet and talk ‘Council talk’ with Ross. He wanted to find out all there is to know about working with Councils. After the presentations of the candle jar and terrarium gifts, everyone was invited to enjoy canapés while taking in the unique surroundings of the venue.
