In Troy’s room, you will find a large collage with pictures of characters from The Simpsons. It’s his favourite show and one that brings out his cheeky personality and beautiful smile.
Troy moved into Afford’s Cranbourne Supported Accommodation in July this year to find a place that he could call ‘home’ and have support to do the things he loves.
Communicating his wants and needs with staff can be difficult for Troy sometimes. Staff are working towards understanding Troy’s preferred methods of communication. They reassure him that they are there around the clock if he needs them. Over the months, Troy has become settled and comfortable in his new home.
One of Troy’s main goals is to develop his independent living skills. With support, he helps make his breakfast by getting the Weetbix out of the cupboard and the milk out of the fridge.
He has already developed a friendship with his housemate, Jacob, and he isn’t shy in blowing kisses to staff as he passes by. Week after week, Troy increases in confidence, and he lets his unique personality shine through.
As part of the Afford Lifestyle, staff support Troy to stay connected with family and friends. While Melbournians are in lockdown, staff support Troy to keep contact with his mum and family over the phone. Once restrictions ease, his family are keen to have him around on the weekend to see his sisters and nieces.
Nothing brings a bigger smile to Troy’s face than turning on the TV to watch The Simpsons. It makes him laugh and brings him immense joy.
With one-to-one support, Troy is living the life he chooses. He has a place to call home where he can find support 24 hours a day, seven days a week if or when he needs it.
Afford is a leader in Supported Accommodation because residents love the Afford Lifestyle. The Afford Lifestyle is all about Afford staff going above and beyond to ensure that residents can live life on their terms and do the things that matter most to them.
