If you have a passion for art and the environment, then you will love the new Upcycling Arts Program established at Afford’s Guildford Day Program!

Thanks to funding from the Cumberland Community Grants Program, clients attending the Guildford site are changing mundane items into showstopping works of art!

The funding has meant that more resources can be purchased for clients to engage in the art experience. It also means that clients can have expert advice and guidance from Sydney based contemporary artist, Diamando Koutsellis, who facilitates the program on-site.

Learn Something New

The sessions explore the art of upcycling. This involves re-purposing unwanted materials and products destined for landfill. Upcycling can change a football into a plant pot, or a wooden crate into a bench seat. The possibilities are endless and only limited by our imaginations!

Get Individualised Support

During the weekly program, 13 clients benefit from having a professional artist there to help them through the process. Diamando assists clients in elevating ordinary items into extraordinary creations! Their latest project was making everyday pillowcases come to life with design and colour!

Using stencils or drawing free-hand, clients transfer images of things like a bulldog or butterflies onto their pillowcases. Diamando offers support every step of the way. She provides suggestions for drawings or using shadow to make different parts of designs stand out.

Fabric paints are used to add colour and a ‘WOW factor’ to designs. Once the paint has dried, the pillowcases are stuffed with filling to reveal the final product. Thanks to the one-on-one instruction, regular pillowcases become artistic masterpieces!

Hussain participates in the Upcycling Arts Program at Guildford. He said: “I’m so excited to have made my pillowcase with my own design.”

Now, thanks to the Cumberland Community Grants Program, everyone at Guildford can learn how to give new purpose to unused items with a little thought and creativity.

Enhancing Services and Supports to Benefit Clients

Grants provide essential funds for Afford to enhance services and supports for clients. In these challenging times, on-site activities are more important than ever. Experiences such as the Upcycling Arts Program made possible by the Cumberland Community Grants Program give individuals living with disability opportunities to develop skills and explore their creativity.
