How to choose the right SIL provider

What is a SIL provider?

A SIL provider delivers supported independent living (SIL) services to people with disability.

SIL is a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support that helps people with disability to live as independently as possible.

How do I choose a SIL provider?

It’s important to take your time and feel confident in your choice of SIL provider. 

Here’s a handy checklist of things to look out for when you’re choosing a SIL provider.

• Do they take the time to get to know you, your needs and goals?
• Do they show understanding about your disability and any medical needs?
• Are they willing to talk with you in the way that works best for you?
• Are they happy to answer any questions you might have? 
• Are they a registered provider with the NDIS?
• Do they have experience as a SIL provider?
• Do they have good reviews or recommendations?
• Can they show strong governance frameworks?
• Do they have qualified and capable staff?
• Do they have robust compliance systems in place?
• Do they have a commitment to good outcomes?
• Can they show that they meet NDIS requirements?
• Do they regularly review their policies, procedures and systems?
• Are their policies and procedures easy to find?

If they cannot or will not do all or most of these things, they are probably not a good choice.

What is mandatory SIL provider registration?

From 1 July 2026, every SIL provider delivering NDIS-funded SIL supports must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

This is one of the ways the Government and NDIS can make sure SIL providers are safe and will meet their responsibilities by providing quality supports. Learn more about becoming a SIL provider.

How can I check a SIL provider’s registration?

To check if a SIL provider is registered, you can ask to see their certificate of registration or look them up on the NDIS Commission website.

To search for a SIL provider with the NDIS Commission, go to the Search for a registered NDIS Provider tool, then enter their business name or their legal name. 

For example, to search for Afford, go to the search tool and enter our full business name: Australian Foundation For Disability. You will see that we are an approved provider.
