Afford, one of Australia’s leading disability service providers, has partnered with inclusive modelling agency Model Mates to deliver a three-day modelling course designed to empower people with disability to step confidently into the world of fashion, media and advertising.
Five Afford clients took part in the hands-on program. They learned everything from how to pose for the camera and walk a fashion runway to discovering their best angles. They also learned how to take professional direction and develop their own personal style.
A Stylish Learning
The course included practical sessions such as shopping on a budget, building a portfolio-ready wardrobe and understanding how to present themselves professionally in creative environments.
Throughout the three days, participants not built tangible skills that could lead to paid work as models, actors and performers. Equally as important, they forged new friendships, boosted their confidence and stepped outside their comfort zones. For many, it was the first time they’d seen themselves represented in a space that has historically overlooked people with disability.
Leading the Way
Afford CEO Jo Toohey said the partnership was a powerful example of what happens when the disability community is given the tools, encouragement and opportunity to take centre stage.
“Representation matters -deeply,” said Ms Toohey said.
“One in five Australians identifies as having a disability, yet this diversity is rarely reflected in mainstream fashion or media. This program is about changing that. Our clients deserve not just to be seen, but to be celebrated.”
The experience was transformative for participants both personally and professionally.
Powerful Change
“The program meant we were able to see our clients light up,” said Ms Toohey.
“They learned new skills, tried things they’d never imagined and supported one another. They proved that with the right opportunities they can absolutely thrive in creative industries. This project is important because it opens the door to real, paid employment – work where their presence brings authenticity to Australian advertising and fashion.”
Ms Toohey said Afford’s partnership with Model Mates is just one of many initiatives Afford is working on, all designed to broaden opportunities for people with disability and break down long-standing barriers.
“Our clients have ambition, talent, drive and individuality in spades,” she said. “We’re committed to backing them into spaces where they can represent themselves – and their community – with pride. This modelling course is just the beginning.”
PLEASE NOTE:
The modelling program will conclude on December 3 with an exhibition at PHIVE in Parramatta Square, celebrating International Day of People with Disability.
Portraits taken at the professional modelling course will be formally revealed at the event. This will showcase our clients’ new skills to staff, friends and family.
We’re excited to share the results and the start of a new chapter filled with confidence, connection and possibility.
