Jo Toohey to step down as CEO of Afford

The Australian Foundation for Disability (Afford) has announced that Chief Executive Officer Joanne Toohey will step down from her role, with her final day on Friday 8 May 2026.

Jo joined Afford in October 2021 at a time of significant challenge for the organisation. During her tenure, she has led a major program of transformation to stabilise and strengthen Afford, improve services, and position the organisation for long-term sustainability.

Afford is now in a strong position, with improved systems and governance, a strengthened leadership team, and a clear focus on achieving better outcomes for the people it supports. Jo Toohey said the decision to step down was based on timing, as the organisation prepares for its next phase.

“I came to Afford because I believed in what it could be. An organisation grounded in purpose, focused on human rights, and committed to improving the lives of people with disability. Over the past few years, we have done a huge amount of work to strengthen the organisation. That has not always been easy, but it has been important work. I am proud of how Afford has responded to challenges, particularly in the context of the Disability Royal Commission, by being honest about where we needed to do better and committing to real change.

“Most importantly, I am proud of the moments that matter. Celebrating supported employees at their graduations, seeing people build confidence and independence, and watching people achieve goals that are important to them. As Afford prepares for its next chapter, it feels like the right time to hand over to the next leader, who will put their own mark on Afford and take it forward,” Ms Toohey said.

Afford Board Chair Carol Bryant said the organisation is now well positioned for what comes next.

“Jo stepped into the role at a time when Afford needed steady leadership and clear direction. Over the past few years, she’s helped guide the organisation through significant change and put the right foundations in place for the future. Afford is in a much stronger position today because of that work, and we thank her for her contribution. The Board is confident in the next phase of leadership and the organisation’s future.”

Afford will commence the process to appoint its next Chief Executive Officer.

From 8 May, Nick Johnson, Chief Financial Officer, will step into the role of Acting CEO, while the Board begins an external recruitment process for the CEO role.
