Moving out of home is a huge step. But it was one that Afford client Olivia knew she was ready for.
So, Olivia, 21, and her family visited a handful of our Supported Independent Living (SIL) properties. They found one that was perfect. Excited, Olivia was soon planning how she would decorate her bedroom.
Working alongside Olivia and her family, the Afford SIL team helped bring her vision to life. It was the beginning of a new chapter – one filled with experiences, friendships and opportunities to build the independent life Olivia was ready for.
A very big step
Having lived with her family all her life, leaving home wasn’t just about changing addresses. It meant learning new routines, meeting new people and finding confidence in a completely different environment.
Like anyone moving into a new home, there were adjustments.
Getting to know a team of different support workers was one of the biggest changes. It took time, patience and plenty of conversations to build trust. But little by little, Olivia settled in, forming strong relationships with the people supporting her every day.
What came naturally was connecting with her housemates.
Nothing says celebration like a chocolate cake.
Building strong bonds
She loved the spacious home from day one and quickly made it her own. Her natural curiosity (she was intrigued by SIL Service Manager Toppy’s dark skin) sparked plenty of smiles and helped create genuine friendships built on openness and trust.
Throughout the past year, Olivia’s confidence has continued to grow.
She’s become far more independent in the kitchen and now enjoys preparing meals herself, with support nearby when needed. Her determination shines through in everything she does. Once she decides to tackle something, she gives it her all.
“I call her Miss Independent,” says SIL Service Manager Toppy.
Gaining new skills
The changes extend well beyond practical skills, however.
Today, Olivia is confident, comfortable and settled. She’s embraced new experiences and built meaningful relationships with the people around her. Indeed, a year on from her big move, she has a reputation for remembering everyone’s birthday.
Her mum Michelle has watched that growth unfold with pride.
“I can’t believe how fast the year has gone,” says Michelle.
“Overall, I believe she has managed really well. She was so happy she could change her fan and install the blind to make her room more comfortable.”
Party guests, including SIL Service Manager Toppy at the head of the table, tuck into some delicious meals and sweet treats.
Making bold moves
Like any young person making a home her own, Olivia also has a few opinions about household life.
She has very strong feelings about onions … and pasta sauce too, says Michelle with a laugh. But it’s those everyday moments that show what independence really looks like.
In July, Olivia celebrated her first year in her home and she did it surrounded by the people who matter most – her family, housemates and support team. There was cake and laughter and even a rowdy session of karaoke.
Seeing Olivia flourish makes Toppy’s heart sing.
“Watching Olivia become more independent and happy reminds me why I chose this profession,” she says.
“There is no greater reward than seeing someone achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. Being trusted to support someone through such an important chapter of their life is a privilege I never take for granted.”
