What is supported independent living?
Supported independent living (SIL) is an NDIS support that helps you live independently. This can mean living on your own or with other people with disability.
For some people, independent living means having support with cooking, cleaning or personal care. For others, it means going on adventures with friends, learning new skills or having someone nearby when you need backup.

How to pay for SIL
Funding and eligibility
You can use your NDIS plan to pay for supported independent living, or choose to fund your support privately.
We’ll help you understand what’s included, what’s not and how to make your funding work for you.
SIL is available for people aged 18 and over who need help with daily living tasks and want to live more independently. Your planner or Local Area Coordinator can also guide you through eligibility and next steps.
We also have options for people who are self-funded and want to access our range of disability services.
Board and lodging
Your NDIS SIL funding doesn’t cover rent or everyday living costs. You can pay for these with your Disability Support Pension, Commonwealth Rent Assistance or other income.

Anyone aged 18 or over living with disability can apply for SIL through Afford. You can use your NDIS plan or pay privately.

We’ll talk with you about who you’d like to live with and find housemates you’ll get along with.
