What are Individualised Living Options?

Everyone likes their home to feel right.

Maybe you want to live on your own. Maybe you want a housemate. Maybe you want to live with a family who can help you.

Individualised living options can help you live how you like.

What is an ILO?

ILO is short for individualised living options.

It is a way to set up your home life the way you want it.

You choose where you live. You choose who you live with. Then you get support that fits.

No two ILO homes look the same. At Afford, we can help you set up an individualised living options (ILO) home that suits you.

What is ILO in the NDIS?

ILO is a support that the NDIS can pay for.

ILO only pays for your support, not your house.

It does not pay your rent, food, or bills. You pay those yourself.

Lots of people use their Disability Support Pension to pay for this.

What ILO pays for is the help you need at home.

Ways people use ILO

People use ILO in lots of different ways.

Here are some examples:

  • Living on your own. You have your own place. Support workers come when you need them.
  • Living with a housemate. You pick someone you get along with. You share the home.
  • Living with a host family. You live with a family who help look after you.
  • Living with friends. You and your friends share a home and share support.

You can mix things up, too.

Maybe your mum helps you on Sundays. Maybe a neighbour drives you to the shops. Maybe a support worker comes every morning.

ILO works around all of that. It uses the help you already have, and adds what is missing.

How is ILO different from SIL?

SIL is short for supported independent living.

With SIL, you usually live in a home with other people. Support workers are there on a set roster.

ILO is more flexible. You pick where you live and who you live with. Then support is built around your day.

SIL often suits people who need a lot of help all day. ILO often suits people who need a bit less help.

At Afford, we provide supported independent living and individualised living options. You can Contact us online or call us on the phone at 1800 233 673 to talk about what is right for you.

How is ILO different from SDA?

SDA is short for Specialist Disability Accommodation.

SDA is about the building. These are special homes built for people with very high support needs.

ILO is not about the building. It is about the support you receive and how your home life works.

Some people have both. It depends on what you need.

At Afford, we provide Specialist Disability Accommodation and individualised living options. Contact us online or call us on the phone at 1800 233 673 to learn more.

Who can get ILO?

To get ILO from the NDIS, you usually need to:

  • Be 18 or older. You can also be 17 and thinking about your future home.
  • Need help at home for at least 6 hours a day.
  • Be ready to think about how you want to live.

Not sure if that sounds like you? Your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator can help you check.

You do not need NDIS funding to use ILO with Afford. You can also pay with your own money.

How does ILO get set up?

ILO takes some planning. That is a good thing. It means your home really suits you.

Here is how it works with us:

  • We have a chat. You tell us what you want and what you need.
  • We make a plan together. We look at where you might live and who could help you.
  • We help you get set up. Then your support starts.
