The serene sound of the Nepean River waters splashing through the paddle wheels of the historic Nepean Belle was the perfect setting for carers and parents from Afford’s Mt Druitt Community Centre to enjoy some well-deserved R&R.

Afford organises Carers Events with a difference. The events give carers of individuals with disability an experience to unwind and an environment that supports friendship and understanding.

The Mt Druitt Community Centre carer event involved a cruise along the majestic Nepean River on a traditional paddle wheeler. The cruise was a chance for attendees to enjoy the natural beauty of the Penrith region as well as a sumptuous three-course meal. The vessel boasts a magnificent staircase for attendees to access the upper level. The rich, wooden trimmings made the evening feel extra special and almost like a step back in time.

Reflecting on the year just gone, carers and Afford staff used the opportunity to get to know each other a little better. Parents and carers could connect directly with staff supporting their loved ones. They also had the chance to meet other families who share similar life experiences.

There were stories of challenge and triumph. Attendees also discussed supports, programs and activities to suit the needs of their loved ones.

During a brief docking at Wallacia, attendees disembarked the boat to socialise with others. Everyone enjoyed learning more about the backgrounds and Afford journeys of others in the group.

Afford carers events are organised for carers and parents across all Afford Community Centres and services. The events give families the chance to take time out for themselves, enjoy the company of others and focus on their own mental wellbeing to be the best carer for their loved one.
