Meet Blake, a 19-year-old trainee in Afford’s School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program. Now in his second year of SLES, Blake is steadily building the skills he needs to make the leap from school to the workforce.
Work ready skills
From learning money management through retail roleplay and cash handling to honing essential time management and travel skills, Blake said he is building the skills he needs to succeed. “I have gained many work ready skills during my time at SLES and that makes me feel great!”
Applying for jobs
When it comes to job hunting, Blake’s leaving no stone unturned. “I set myself goals to get a job. I want to work to help others and make money,” Blake said. Working with his SLES coach, Blake has been researching different industries and roles to identify where his skills are a match. Together they explore job platforms, shortlist interesting roles, and the craft customised cover letters and applications.
Volunteer experience
It’s not just about landing a job for Blake; it’s about thriving in the workplace. That includes learning about coworker interactions, workplace etiquette, and conflict resolution. And he’s even dipped his toes into the world of volunteering to gain more experience, assisting at the Caboolture Community Centre and Abbey Museum.
Life after SLES
Blake’s journey is about persistence, growth, and setting achievable goals. As he continues on his path to employment, he’s showing that with the right support, anything is possible. When we asked Blake about what’s next, he said “After SLES finishes I would like to be working most of my days to help and meet new people.”
