Selina is an indigenous woman who attends our Noble Park Day Program. She has a passion for art but for a long time hid her wonderful talents from the world. Until recently, Selina hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in over three years.

Supported by staff at Noble Park Community Centre, Selina has a renewed love of art and craft and now has the confidence to complete her own pieces, as well as support other clients get the most out of the creative process.

Proud of her Aboriginal heritage, Selina recently decided to release her talents during the regular art program at her site.

As one of her first return art attempts, Selina created a piece which reflected her admiration of her favourite AFL Club, Collingwood and her Aboriginal culture.

With a fresh enthusiasm for art, she also began supporting her peers to use art for self-expression. She talked about her artwork with clients. She spoke about her idol, AFL player Dane Swan, as well as the importance of culture in her life. She also talked about why she included these in her artwork.

“It has been Selina’s dream to teach art. We have supported Selina to be confident in her abilities, and now her dream has become a reality. She is very engaging when she speaks with other clients about art. She is passionate and encouraging of others,” said Breanna, Noble Park Community Centre Team Leader.

During art sessions, Selina is at her best and enthusiastically shares her interests and skills with clients.

She supports clients to explore their creativity by using paints, as well as objects and craft to create sensational pieces that represent their most special interest.

At Afford, we celebrate the many unique talents of our clients. Our staff support each individual to realise their goals and be confident in their abilities to live life the way they choose under the NDIS.
