Spring has sprung, and the Ipswich Community Centre celebrated the warm weather by heading out to Roma St Parklands for a day of sunshine, selfies and smelling the roses. The day had something for everyone and they enjoyed being outdoors and spending time in each other’s company.

Afford Community Centres encourage clients to learn new skills, find creative ways to express themselves and keep active.

“The gardens were beautiful. The clients loved the big lake and fountain which had lots of small fish in it. They would come right up to the client’s hands and interact,” said Lifestyle Assistant, Kayla Martin.

The day was an excellent opportunity for travel training, as it is approximately a 45-minute drive from the centre. The expansive park is excellent for picnics and has an on-site café for clients who want to practice money handling and communication skills.

“It’s so amazing when we find a fun activity that has so many training options for everyone. It means they not only enjoy their day out but they come away from it feeling so much more confident and independent,” continued Kayla.

The clients were fascinated by the number of lizards they spotted on the nature walk and they also enjoyed stopping to read the plaques and learn more about the flowers. As expected, clients also used the stunning location to practice their photography skills and of course, they had to take some selfies.

“A highlight of the day was finding the flower garden and other interactive photo opportunities. The ladies loved it and had a lot of fun laughing and smiling with their friends,” said Kayla.

The day was the first time Ipswich explored Roma St Parklands but it certainly won’t be the last.
