Everyone’s a gold medallist at Heroes with Ability

Afford’s partner Heroes with Ability (HWA) recently hosted a mini Olympics Gala Day, where our clients had a blast competing for the coveted Afford – HWA Shield. Over 100 participants attended to show off the sports skills they have mastered throughout the last ten weeks and put their teamwork to the test. 

HWA runs specialised sporting programs for our clients to experience the joy, community and wellbeing of keeping active and being part of society. 

“The Afford clients love these events. They always look forward to them. It’s all about them having fun, experiencing a team environment and supporting each other,” said Director and Co-Founder, Marco Quintao. 

When the participants arrived at the Michael Clarke Recreation Centre, they were split into six groups, representing their favourite NRL teams – The Eels, Panthers, Bulldogs, Eagles, Rabbits and Tigers. Working together challenged our clients to use their communication and social skills with new friends outside their community centres. 

“All of the regular friendly faces attended from Auburn, Belmore, Blacktown, Bonnyrigg, Canley vale, Condell park, Gregory hills, Lurnea and Windsor. This was a team event and everyone was excited to work together. For our final relay, I asked for volunteers to help the Eagles team and so many people put their hands up. They know the day is not about winning but participating,” continued Marco. 

Everyone who attended left with a special gift, a HWA medal. It is a physical reminder of their achievements over the last ten weeks and the special memories they have created. 

“They loved the medallions. On Friday night, we had some clients attend our NRL inclusion bay and they showed up with their medals hanging proudly around their necks. It shows that they will treasure these moments for the rest of their lives,” said Marco.
