New kitchen nurtures budding chefs

Afford’s Kings Park Community Centre will nurture budding gourmet chefs thanks to a newly renovated kitchen made possible by grant funding from Community Building Partnerships.

The new kitchen features a long benchtop with loads of space for food preparation. The addition of an island bench means that more cooks can join in the fun. Clients in wheelchairs can also participate in cooking sessions with a lower benchtop installed to suit their specific needs.

A new oven and stovetop will be kept warm and busy with clients ready and willing to get out the pans to fry and bake to their heart’s delight.

The new kitchen has lots of storage space which will come in handy as the site’s kitchen program grows and more utensils and baking and cooking ware is needed.

“The new kitchen is such a great addition to the Kings Park Community Centre. Our cooking program is very popular. Having a kitchen that suits everyone’s unique needs and abilities means that our clients can cook together and develop their cooking skills for independence,” said Gifty, Team Leader at Kings Park Community Centre.

Cooking programs are included as part of the activity line up across many Afford Community Centre services. Cooking provides opportunities to learn new life skills, develop skills to follow instructions, and of course, share the spoils of hard work in the kitchen with friends.

“We are very grateful for the funding from Community Building Partnerships to renovate our kitchen for the benefit of the clients who attend our site. This funding helps Afford to enhance services and supports to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to do the things they love with support,” added Gifty.

The Community Building Partnerships funding also provided for a renovation of the site’s bathroom and wet area.
