Selina is a determined and resilient young artist who has found who has found her passion for art once again, since attending Afford’s Community Centre and Respite Services. She is an Indigenous woman who, aside from her art, loves to study. In 2007 she was the first Aboriginal student to get Commonwealth Scholarship in Tasmania and graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Arts and Honours in Social work. She also has a Diploma in Design and Fashion.

“In August last year when Selina joined Afford, she started painting again. Selina attributes her motivation for painting to her positive outlook on life and the supportive team at Afford,” said Lifestyle Assistant Jo Ann Buabo.

Selina has fostered her passion through an online art program hosted during the peak COVID-19 restrictions and then she continued on that momentum when she joined Afford’s Community Centre.

When asked about her favourite pieces to create, she is most proud of her paintings and Indigenous art, representing her connection to her culture.

Painting is a way for her to communicate her emotions. She told her lifestyle assistant, “My paintings are how I express my feelings. They make me happy.”

Selina’s favourite motto is “You can achieve anything when you put your mind to it,” and she uses this quote to motivate her every day.

During art sessions, she enthusiastically shares her skills and artistic eye with the other clients and one day dreams of teaching art independently to others with disability.

At all Afford Services, we celebrate the many unique talents of our clients and encourage them to achieve their dreams.

Our staff support each individual living the Afford Lifestyle to realise their goals and become confident in their abilities.
