Afford clients from the Leumeah Supported Independent Living (SIL) home had a magical day at Campbelltown’s ‘Handmade and Homegrown Markets on Q.’ With local arts, crafts, food and enchanting special guests, it was an excellent opportunity for the ladies to work on achieving their goals. Their day was made even more special when they spotted a mermaid and fairy amongst the crowd!
At Afford SIL homes, you will always have opportunities to work on your goals while having new and exciting experiences.
“The ladies liked meeting the mermaid and fairy. It was something different. Christie was very intrigued by the mermaid. This day was a great social activity for the clients as they interacted with the wider community. It is great that the council promotes local events like this,” said Lifestyle Assistant, Michael Peters.
The street festival encourages local artisans, food stalls, and even magical creatures to share their crafts and skills with the community.
“Myself and Lifestyle Assistant, Fanta Sillah, had planned to take the ladies bowling since this is an activity that Christie does at her community centre and Buffy had expressed interest in during a weekly client meeting. However, the local bowling alley was closed to the public on the day due to a tournament. We had heard about the market and after talking to Christie and Buffy, they were keen to go,” continued Michael.
Both ladies have goals to access the community and increase their social participation. The markets were a fantastic opportunity to work on these goals and spend time together outside of their usual routine.
Buffy also aims to enhance her independence and positively regulate her emotions, two more goals she was able to work on during their shopping trip after the festival.
“We involve Buffy in as many opportunities as possible to help her build independent living skills. Buffy put the shopping items on the register and helped carry them. She also went back to the street stalls to purchase ice cream,” continued Michael.
Michael has been working with Christie for the past three years and Buffy joined the house one year ago. She loves to socialise and is a welcome addition to the home. Along with the other two residents, Emre and Katerina, the Leumeah SIL crew always have exciting adventures.
