Starting your day with a coffee and muffin is made even sweeter by being greeted with a genuine smile. Kailum from SLES Caboolture has been serving coffees with a side of happiness during his work experience at the local Muffin Break café.

Afford’s School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES,) will help you draw up a personalised plan to equip you with the skills, knowledge and real-world experience you need, to enter work or further training.

Kailum has been completing work experience at Muffin Break for the past four months and being promoted to customer service was a significant boost to his confidence.

“When the Muffin Break staff invited Kailum to start working with customers, he was over the moon,” said SLES Vocational Trainer, Taniel Eising

As expected, he was a bit nervous but his warm and welcoming personality quickly shone through.

“I was so proud. Watching him overcome his nerves to serve customers so professionally has been amazing. He is now displaying excellent customer service skills and works the cash register like a pro,” continued Taniel.

Kailum’s personal goals for volunteering are to gain confidence with communication, learn new skills, have new experiences, meet new people, and most importantly, have fun!

The broad range of tasks at Muffin Break has given Kailum an excellent overview of the hospitality industry and the chance to achieve these goals.

He has demonstrated an enthusiasm for being a team player and doesn’t hesitate to take on tasks such as preparing food and milkshakes, cleaning and delivering orders.

“I have noticed a massive boost in his confidence. I look forward to watching him continue to grow with each future shift,” said Taniel.
