Kia ora (hello)! Our Beenleigh and Ipswich Affordians recognised New Zealand’s Waitangi Day on a Club Afford outing where they immersed themselves in New Zealand culture and had fun with new friends.
At Afford, we support individuals to explore and learn more about the world around them. We support every person to participate in cultural traditions and celebrations and foster a sense of community and inclusion for all.
Waitangi Day is New Zealand’s national day and recognised on the 6th of February. The day commemorates the first signing of New Zealand’s founding document: Te Tiriti o Waitangi, The Treaty of Waitangi.
As a sign of solidarity with our trans-Tasman friends, our Beenleigh and Ipswich Community Centre clients gathered at the Pimpama Tavern to recognise this important day. Everyone had the chance to try traditional Kiwi inspired delicacies and enjoy cultural music and dancing. The Polynesian shows had everyone on their feet and in a festive mood.
Club Afford participants get the chance to meet other like-minded friends and get involved in new life experiences with support and encouragement.
“It was the first Club Afford event that Ben has attended and he loved it. Everyone welcomed him, and they all got to know each other a little better while they danced. Club Afford is a great way for our clients to engage in community activities and meet new people,” said Hana, Team Leader at Beenleigh Community Centre.
“There were New Zealand foods that some of our clients have never tasted before, so they really enjoyed sharing a new experience with friends and having that connection.”
Club Afford promotes social activities, healthy living, fun and exploration of the local community.
