Knowing how to manage social situations is a valuable life skill that helps nurture self-confidence and a willingness to take on new life experiences.

For Laura, going on a ride of the Melbourne Star was something she was keen to try. To encourage residents to engage in a variety of social situations, Afford staff organised for residents from the Trafalgar home to join Laura and her housemates for the Melbourne Star ride.

At first, Laura was a little apprehensive to join in with the other residents. Staff supported Laura by talking to her about her feelings. They also talked about ways to manage emotions, such as taking time out from group settings.

During the trip, residents enjoyed the panoramic views of Melbourne. They looked out all windows of the cabin to take in the beautiful day and experience.

With support, Laura and another resident, Jackson, were laughing and reminiscing about their ride on the Melbourne Star by the end of the day.

Getting out and about in the community and participating in social situations helps develop resilience for life.

As part of the Afford Lifestyle, our staff go above and beyond to support residents to feel comfortable doing the things they love. We encourage residents to try new life experiences to broaden their understanding of the world around them and explore their interests.
